Bang (Benz) Tran, PhD

Computer Science Professor

I was born in Son La, a northern province of Vietnam, then grew up in Thai Nguyen city where I completed my primary, secondary and high school education. I obtained my bachelor’s degree from the University of Enigeering and Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-UET) in 2001. After graduation, I worked for two years as a software engineer at Global Technology LLC, where I developed Web-based applications for various organizations, companies, and institutions. 

In 2003, I joined the University of Transport and Communications (UTC) where I worked until December 2018. During my time at UTC, I held different managerial positions such as Director of Library and Information Center (4 years), Head of Student Affair Office (2.5 years), Deputy Head of Education and Training Board (5 years), and Secretary of Youth Union (concurrent position, 2 years). I also taught a wide range of computer science and engineering courses at  the University of Transport and Communication - Campus in Hochiminh City  (UCT2), the University of Information Technology (UIT), and the Lac Hong University, which including Computer Networking, Database Systems, Data Structures and Algorithms, Computer Programming 1 & 2, Advanced Data Structures, Web Programming, and Computer Architectures.

In 2010, I received my master’s degree in Software Engineering from the Unversity of Bordeaux 1, France (an oversea collaborated program with VNUHCM-Vietnam National University, Hochiminh). In 2019, I made the decision to pursue a doctoral degree to achieve my ambition of pursuing a career in academia with both research and teaching responsibilities. I joined the University of Massachusetts in Boston (UMB) in January 2019 and completed PhD in Computer Science in 2023. My PhD dissertation titled Enhancing Security and Privacy for Voice Assistant Systems was direted by Prof. Xiaohui Liang. During my PhD study, I published six papers, taught two courses (Applied Discrete Mathematics) for undergraduate students of UMB, and worked as a research assistant for four semesters at the Mobile Computing and Privacy Lab (MobCP)

From the fall of 2023, I am happy and excited to start a new position as a Tenure-track Assistant Professor at D'Amour College of Liberal Arts and Science at Assumption University
